When the great Heinrich Schütz published his Geistliche Chor-Music in 1648, German-language sacred music was strongly influenced by the modern and innovative madrigal style from Italy. One spoke of a “peculiarly graceful Italian madrigal style”, or a “peculiarly lovely madrigal style”. Heinrich Schütz, on the other hand, shows how one could write lively polyphonic music in pure counterpoint style without violating the sacrosanct rules of composition of the 16th century. In its new recording of these works, the Ensemble Polyharmonique unites ideas from German and Franco-Flemish vocal culture to create lively poetic interpretations.

As a listener, you may need to have the courage to surrender to the pervasiveness of this music, a music that does not wear out and continues to open up – to the one who engages with it. But in the end you will be richly rewarded by the highest artistic enjoyment and valuable musical experiences that will set heart and mind equally vibrating.
